I took the boys for a walk on Sunday (17/8/08) at the beach and Tai took off down the sand dunes to the water. I saw some other dogs coming so I called him back up to the top of the sand dunes on the grassed area and he hooned up the steps to me then I heard screaming so I ran down the stairs and he was hobbling up with his front left leg poking at an abnormal angle. I just grabbed him and supported his hanging leg. I got the other lady with her dogs to go to my parents bach to get someone. At the beach we splinted his leg with a wooden spoon and bandage and then transported him to the car to the small vet clinic at Pauanui. He said he couldn't do anything for us and told us to go to Whangamata - which is 45 min away on very windy roads!!!
Once settled in the car he coped well with the trip over the hill and 1.5 hrs after the accident we saw a fantastic vet. He sedated him in the car and we took him in for x-rays. He has broken his radius and ulna about 3/4 of the way up. He has a sturdy splint and lots of bandages on at the moment. The vet recommended Steve McGill (who I was going to call anyway!) so he phoned for us and Steve said he could see Tai today. After a trip back home over the f******* windy hills we packed up and went back home over more windy hills via Matamata to see Steve.
He is going to operate tomorrow to put a plate in and possibly a pin depending on how it looks when he opens it up.
Although he should make a good recovery I am still devastated that my baby had to go through pain for so long. He was a brilliant patient though. I can still feel his bones grating in my hands though which is awful but I have almost stopped shaking.
